(Week of 4/7/2012) The President’s order that health care plans funded by organizations associated with religious groups provide contraceptive coverage (since altered) caused some Republicans (including some presidential candidates) to accuse the President and his party of "waging a war against religious freedom." Americans don’t see it that way.

However, that’s not the way most religious Americans see it. The numbers are close, but a slight majority of those who say religion is very important in their lives say it is happening. Respondents who attend church once a week or more are split evenly on the question.

Religious Americans are more likely to identify with the Republican Party than are those who are less religious. And Republicans, 65% to 20%, say their opponents are waging a war on religious freedom.
