(Week of 5/5/2012) The first Obama television ad attacking the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was one that focused on Romney’s foreign policy skills and toughness. The ad claimed that Romney would not have issued the order to kill Osama bin Laden. It was followed by an emphatic statement from Romney that he would have issued the order, as well as criticism of the Obama campaign for politicizing the killing of bin Laden. On this matter, the latest Economist/YouGov Poll finds more Americans agreeing with the Romney campaign than with the President and his campaign.

Just 26% agree with the President’s position, while 37% agree with the Romney campaign. But another 26% agree with neither. Responses are partisan, as one might expect. However, nearly one in three Democrats take neither side in this dispute, compared with just 11% of Republicans.

Handling of terrorism remains one of the President’s strong points. 53% of Americans approve of his handling of terrorism, his highest approval rating on any specific issue.
