(Week of 5/26/2012) The traditional divide in perceptions of the two major parties is alive and well: Americans in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll see the Democrats as better for the poor, for immigrants and (more narrowly) for the middle class, and view the GOP as better for Wall Street by a wide margin and for small business by a smaller one.

Most Americans consider themselves to be middle class, so it is no surprise that Democrats and Republicans are strongly divided on the question of which party best represents middle class interests. Independents side with Democrats on this item, with 43% answering that Democrats are better for the middle class and only 26% answering that Republicans are better. Democrats and Republicans also split dramatically on the question of which party is better for small businesses. But on this matter, independents side with Republicans 36% to 30%.
