(Week of 7/14/2012) Looking past the 2012 elections, Americans expect little change in party control of the federal government. The latest Economist/YouGov Poll finds Americans expect a Democratic President will once again square off against a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
Nearly twice as many registered voters think that Barack Obama will be re-elected as think his GOP opponent will win. Over twice as many registered voters expect the GOP to retain control of the House as think the Democrats will take control.
There is more confidence among Obama voters that their choice will win: 77% of them say the President will definitely or probably be re-elected. Just half of Romney supporters think their candidate will definitely or probably win.
Americans are more closely divided in terms of which party they think will control the Senate after the election. 34% of registered voters think the Democrats will keep control, but 40% think they will lose control. 63% of Democrats think their party will remain in power there; 70% of Republicans disagree and say the Senate will become Republican.
