A large part of the American population thinks that drone strikes in Pakistan should stop if the Pakistani government requests it.
Pakistan recently held a general election which was won by Nawaz Sharif's Muslim League, who will form a government on May 25th. There has been speculation that the new government will ask for Americans to limit or even stop drone strikes in the country after Sharif said that drone strikes violate Pakistani sovereignty.
The latest research by YouGov shows that Americans generally think that the US should respect a request from the Pakistani government to end strikes. 41% think that drone strikes should stop, while 27% think that they should continue even if the Pakistanis ask for an end to drone strikes.
Americans are divided along political lines, with Republicans (41%) being much more likely than Democrats (21%) or Independents (23%) to say that drone strike should continue in the face of Pakistani opposition.
The US has used drones to bomb suspected terrorists in Pakistan since 2004, with estimates of the number of people killed ranging from around 1,500 to 3,500.
