(Week of 7/13/2013) American Lance Armstrong has been forced out of professional cycling because of his use of performance enhancing drugs, and without his presence the Tour de France is of little interest to most Americans. In the latest Economist/YouGov Poll 80% of the public is not paying attention to the Tour de France – which ends this week – at all.

Armstrong’s legacy, however, affects American perception of the other racers. Most believe that at least some of today’s competitors are using performance-enhancing drugs. More than four in ten think many, most, or all the racers are.

Only 3% think the racers today are drug-free.
