Three more weeks of summer?

Labor Day may traditionally mark the end of summer, but Americans disagree and think three more weeks of summer are on their way.

All over the country people are settling down to enjoy a lazy Monday off, in many cases sharing a BBQ with their friends and neighbors to enjoy the last day of warmth and sunshine before fall begins. It's often remarked that Labor Day marks the end of summer even though the autumnal equinox is not until September 22nd, meaning that the last official day of summer is September 21st.

The latest research from YouGov shows that Americans tend to side with Mother Earth in saying that summer isn't over until the equinox. 49% say that summer ends at the equinox, while 23% say that it ends after Labor Day. There are significant differences according to age, however, with younger Americans (33%) often saying that summer ends when the school year begins.

Unsurprisingly, when asked to describe their summer, most Americans (53%) said that it was an 'average' summer. 29% said that it was a 'good summer' while 4% said it was the 'best summer ever'. 10% said that it was a bad summer and 3% said that it was the worst summer ever, with people in the Northeast (23%) being the most likely to have a negative view of how summer 2013 has gone.
