Most Americans back imposing sanctions on Russia after their actions in Ukraine, but shy away from any military involvement
As the crisis in Ukraine continues the United States has announced a range of measures in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. Today, President Obama announced a visa ban on anyone complicit in the recent crisis concerning Crimea's future in Ukraine. This comes as efforts to encourage dialogue between Russia and Ukraine failed hours before the Crimean parliament voted to apply to leave Ukraine and join the Russian federation, with a referendum on the issue planned for March 16th.
The latest research from YouGov shows that most Americans (56%) support the US and the West in general imposing 'strong sanctions' on Russia in response to their actions in Ukraine. Most Americans (52%) also support cancelling the June G8 summit that was set to take place in Sochi.
Most Americans are, however, resolutely against any military involvement in Ukraine. Only 18% think that the US should play a role in the defense of Ukraine's territorial integrity, while 58% oppose it. Americans even tend to oppose the US providing military aid to Ukraine, with 39% saying that the US should not provide military support to the Kiev government. 33% do, however, back military aid for Kiev.
