Most Americans say the United States has become less equal over the past 50 years.

A majority of the country (57%) and of every age group agree that, compared to 1966, the United States today is less equal.

Since 1966 the share of wealth owned by the wealthiest 1% has increased from 28% to over 40%.

People between the ages of 45 and 64 (62%), that is people born between 1952 and 1971, are the most likely to say that America has become less equal. Only 23% of Americans say that the country has grown more equal as the years have passed.
