Democrat Has Small Lead in Washington Race for U.S. Senate

In the final days for the election, in the race for U.S. Senate Democrat Patty Murray leads Republican Dino Rossi by three percentage points among likely voters. Among registered voters the lead is slightly larger with Murray leading Rossi by 5 points.

Race is tight among key voting groups

Unlike in other races where key voting groups can lean heavily in favor of one candidate or another, in this race for U.S. Senate, many of these groups are fairly evenly divided between the two candidates. The race is in a virtual tie among men who are likely voters with Democratic candidate Patty Murray receiving 49 percent support and Republican Dino Rossi receiving 48 percent. Among women Murray leads Rossi by 4 percentage points. Among the key group Independents, Rossi leads Murray by 6 percentage points, while among 30 to 64 year olds, Murray leads Rossi by 6 points.

Methodology

Interviews with 1000 registered voters, including 849 likely voters, were conducted October 25-30, 2010, online using YouGov’s PollingPoint panel. YouGov uses a matched sample methodology that selects respondents to match the Washington registered voter population in terms of demographics (age, race, gender, education, employment status, income, marital status, children), past voting behavior, and political attitudes (interest in politics, party registration, and ideology).
