The 83rdAcademy Awards are nearly upen us. Here is our last chance to see if the American popular vote matches up with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts.

The King’s Speech is the overwhelmingly popular choice for Best Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, with True Grit in second place and Inception third. Despite its popularity for the Oscar title The Kings Speech lags well behind the animated family movie Toy Story, and the brainteaser Inception, in terms of box office revenue and panelist views.

  • 14% of responders thought that The Kings Speech should win the Oscar for best picture
  • 7% preferred True Grit to win top prize
  • The Kings Speech and True Grit are popular with the more mature responder – Inception appealed most to the 18-29 year olds (16%)
  • 38% of our panel have seen Toy Story, 27% Inception, 21% True Grit but only 10% have seen The Kings Speech so far

Despite all the success at the pre-Oscar award ceremonies for Collin Firth, the popular vote for Best Actor category was pretty evenly divided. Firth made it to top spot for Best Actor winner for his portrayal of a struggling King George VI in The Kings Speech, but only just. Jeff Bridges came a close second for Marshal Reuben J ‘Rooster’ Cogburn in True Grit. Firth’s iconic Pride and Prejudice wet shirt sequence may have influenced the female vote.

  • Collin Firth garnered 18% of votes for most popular Best Actor winner, 21% from women, and 15% from men
  • Jeff Bridges gained 17% of the popular vote with a slight bias towards the men
  • Jesse Eisenberg won the youth vote with 13% of 18-29 year olds, but found very little interest from older responders

The Best Actress category was a runaway win for Natalie Portman in Black Swan with 22% of votes cast. Annette Benning and Nicole Kidman came in joint second at 5% each for their roles in The Kids are Alright and Rabbit Hole. Natalie Portman is a particular hit with Hispanic responders, winning 33% of Hispanic votes cast.

The 83rd Academy Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, February 27th.
