(Week of 8/18/2012) American automobiles are back at the top when it comes to the perception of quality: in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll 46% say the United States makes the best cars, with Japanese and German cars trailing by 28 and 20 points respectively.

Democrats are even more likely than Republicans to say American cars are best; younger adults narrowly give Japan first place. There are fewer distinctions when it comes to naming the worst cars. Four in ten give that dubious honor to Korea. However, one in five say the U.S. makes the worst cars.

When it comes to their favorite foods, Americans are eclectic. Large majorities say they like Italian, Chinese, and Mexican food. College graduates are even more diverse when it comes to eating: majorities of them also like Thai, French, Middle Eastern, and Indian food.

But which kind of food do a greater percentage of Americans say they like than any other? Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s American food!

Here partisans differ. Republicans rank Italian food ahead of American food (with Mexican food right behind), while Democrats favor American food by a seven-point margin over Italian cuisine. Chinese food is a close third with Republicans.
