A survey of the country's largest metro areas reveals which cities have a good rapport with their police – and which don't

According to one calculation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were approximately 1.1 million full-time law enforcement officers in the US in 2012. That works out to about 3.4 officers per 1,000 US residents.

A recent YouGov Omnibus poll of America's 20 most populated metro areas shows that residents of Dallas-Fort Worth are the most likely group of urban dwellers to say the relationship between the public and the police in their city is either "very good" or "somewhat good" (86%). Following Dallas-Fort Worth comes Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne (82%) then Boston (81%).

The residents least likely to agree that their city has a good relationship with its police force include Chicago (51%), Minneapolis-St. Paul (65%), Portland (66%), and Los Angeles (66%).

Methodology: Total sample size was 4,019 US adults aged 18+ (i.e. approximately 200 people per metro area). Interviews were conducted online between July 27-31, 2017. All figures have been weighted and are representative of the adult population of each metro area.
