A recent Economist/YouGov poll finds that majorities of Americans support the negotiating of drug prices by the federal government and private insurance companies, as well as by Medicare.
- 62% of Americans support and 17% oppose “the federal government and private insurance companies negotiating with prescription drug manufacturers to set universal prices for prescription drugs"
- 68% support and 11% oppose "allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices directly with prescription drug manufacturers"
While Democrats are more likely to support drug-price negotiation, majorities of Republicans and Independents are also supportive of these proposals.
The poll also shows that roughly two in five Americans (42%) say they have at some point not filled a prescription because they couldn’t afford to pay for it. Half (50%) say they haven't done this and 8% prefer not to say. Support for the government and Medicare negotiating prices is higher among people who have not filled a prescription because they couldn't afford it.
