Criticism for media in Steubenville case

March 19, 2013, 5:12 PM GMT+0

The trial of two high school players for rape in Steubenville, Ohio has attracted national attention. While the defendants were found guilty on Sunday, controversy has continued to surround the case, with the media outlets covering the case now attracting criticism.

CNN, Fox News and MSNBC came under fire when they allowed the name of the victim to be broadcast unedited. The name was said during an apology by one of the defendants. The victim had previously only been identified by "Jane Doe".

CNN has also been criticized for how they covered the case on Sunday. Some have expressed outrage that the network "spent more time focusing on the damage to the lives and the "promising futures" of the two teenagers convicted of raping a girl than on what had happened to the girl herself (...)" An online petition asking for CNN to issue an on-air apology currently has over 170,000 signatures.
