The Supreme Court begins to hear today the first of two cases with potentially sweeping consequences for the legality of gay marriage across the United States.
The arguments today will attempt to "determine if California’s Proposition 8, the initiative that banned gay marriage in the state, violates the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection (…)"
Tomorrow, "the court will consider a provision that defines marriage as between a man and a woman for the purpose of deciding who can receive a range of federal benefits, as part of a 1996 measure called the Defense of Marriage Act (...)"
A recent YouGov/Economist poll shows that by a slim margin Americans favor overturning the Defense of Marriage Act and allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally.
