Support among Republicans and Independents for a national gun registry has dropped significantly since 2011, when a majority in both groups were in favor.
According to a new YouGov poll, 85% of Democrats support requiring gun owners to register their guns with a national gun registry, compared to only 31% of Republicans and 47% of Independents.
This is markedly different from the results of a similar YouGov/Economist poll conducted in January 2011, which saw 84% of Democrats, 57% of Republicans and 61% of Independents say they supported the measure.
Both polls were conducted while gun control was a key item on the national agenda. The Sandy Hook shooting in December has brought recent attempts to reform our nation's gun laws, while the 2011 poll was conducted shortly after the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Overall, 57% of Americans support requiring gun owners to register with a national gun registry today (down from 67%), and 32% opposed it (up from 23%).
