Most Americans reject the idea of giving compensation to former Guantanamo Bay detainees released without charges.
While Guantanamo Bay is run by the American military, the British government has paid millions of dollars in compensation to British citizens and residents who had once been detained at Guantanamo Bay. The former detainees alleged that the British government cooperated with US authorities in their detention and torture, claims denied by the British government.
YouGov’s latest research shows that most Americans (55%) are against giving compensation to former detainees, with 40% saying that compensation should definitely not be given.
Every demographic was against giving compensation, except for Americans aged between 18 and 29. Among this group 41% said that compensation should be given while 32% said compensation should not be given.
Compensation was given in the UK following lawsuits by former detainees, though the US government has immunity against similar lawsuits.
