Increase in data usage has led advertisers to bolster ad targeting among mobile users.

According to CTIA, the trade group of the wireless industry, Americans used 82% more mobile data in 2018 compared to 12.89 trillion megabytes in 2017. The report says that it is equivalent to 250 million people playing “Fortnite” for 1,906 hours.

The number of wireless devices has also increased to 285 million in 2018 compared to 50 million in 2009. Despite the growth, the number of people employed by data carrier companies remained almost the same with 206,855 employees in 2018, which is 62,000 lesser than in 2008.

The wireless industry since 2001 has pumped $542 billion to develop the industry. Meredith Attwell Baker, president and CEO of CTIA said, “This exponential growth underscores the need to continue to free up spectrum to keep up with demand and provide the much-needed capacity for next-generation 5G networks”.
