Europe’s top court ruling could impact several websites embedded with Facebook’s Like button.

Websites using Facebook’s Like button to collect data must obtain explicit consent from visitors before transferring it to Facebook according to a judgment by the EU Court of Justice. The ruling further said that websites that use the Facebook Like button cannot be held as data controllers. The court said the joint responsibility covers collection and transmission of Like data to Facebook Ireland.

Facebook said it may make changes to the ‘Like’ button to make sure all websites comply with GDPR. Similar plugins are used by other social networking sites as well.
