Essential news for marketers, summarised by YouGov

This may impact the access to data marketers who run campaigns on location targeting filters have.

In response to Android and iOS updates that increase user-control over location settings, Facebook is enabling users to manage their location data within the app. Since Android 10 users can control the access of location data given to individual apps, a conflict may arise if the in-app settings differ. In such cases, Facebook will follow “the most restrictive setting” the user selects.

iOS 13 users now have an additional option to “allow once”, giving Facebook temporary access to their location. Facebook will share why it uses a particular type of location information.

These updates enhance user-privacy but potentially reduce the data available to marketers for running location-driven campaigns. Marketers will have to find ways to target audiences beyond location-based filters.
