This article cites a study by the Knight Foundation and Gallup which found that while Americans value local news and want continual access to it, not a lot of them find it worth paying for. 86% of respondents think that everyone should have access to new outlets in areas they live in.
Where Americans believe local news channels to be important, their financial contributions don’t match the value they apparently place on local news. 19% of respondents said that they donated or subscribed to a local news outlet in 2018.
89% of respondents prefer local news to be funded by local residents. However, 76% of respondents believe the financial support should come from philanthropic organisations.
