The users’ birthdates will not be visible to anyone.

Instagram will now be asking users to enter their date of birth before signing up for a new account. The photo-sharing app said that as per their Terms of Use, users must be “at least 13 years old to have an account in most countries”.

Asking for birthdates will help restrict underage people from joining Instagram, thereby enabling more “age-appropriate experiences overall”. Such “age-gates” act as additional detection and enforcement tools that act as a barrier for underage users.

According to researcher David Stier, about two million 12-15 year-old Instagrammers have their phone or email information publically displayed on the platform, thus indicating a significant privacy issue. Instagram may also age-gate business profiles to curtail young users from converting personal profiles into business accounts.
