Advertising Standards Authority received multiple complaints about the TV spot.
Fast-food chain KFC joined other brands like Coors Light and Hershey in suspending their ad campaigns in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The Advertising Standards Authority had received 163 complaints about KFC's campaign that capitalised on its "finger lickin' good" tagline.
A KFC spokesperson said they have paused the campaign for now, but will be bringing it back at a later date. The campaign, which also involved a tentative content series focusing on "finger licking etiquette", was launched in late February before the government launched a campaign on hand hygiene.
An ASA spokesperson said that the KFC "had already taken the decision to withdraw the ad before we had informed them of the complaints." Mother London has designed the ad-spot.
