Amazon could directly compete with Spotify if it runs ads on its podcast shows.
In a recent update, Amazon Music is now offering over 70,000 podcasts, including major titles like “Serial” and “Pod Save America”. The company has also signed exclusive deals to broadcast shows like “Disgraceland”, an iHeartMedia show, and “The First One” hosted by DJ Khaled.
Consumers can listen to podcasts via the updated Amazon Music app, the web or through Amazon Echo devices. Further, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Amazon will be selling ads on its shows.
However, it is currently unclear whether podcast show hosts would read out the ads, both for free or paid subscriptions, similar to Spotify. Audible recently announced its subscription plan with exclusive podcasts that aren’t included in the Amazon Music app.
