This article highlights the changes the UK grocery market underwent in 2020 (based on a Kantar report) and the insights that retailers can use to plan for 2021. The amount spent per trip shopping for groceries has jumped 24% even though the shopping trip frequency dropped 10%.
As of September 2020, the take home grocery market is growing at 12% YoY. The lockdown period saw one in three households shopping online. The report also revealed the average basket size to have increased by £11.
Additionally, the percent of retirees shopping online has gone up 172%. Kantar Worldpanel’s Matt Botham says, “We reckon the grocery market at the end of the year is going to end up in 13% growth.”
