As Shopify expands, concerns about over-dependence on in its service emerge

Shopify benefits from its reputation as a merchant-friendly platform and is a preferred partner among DTC brands.

Shopify is coming close to launching its own marketplace with the unveiling of new products and services. However, if Shopify decides to launch a marketplace, it could risk losing focus form its main enterprise (software-as-a-service platform) and vendors could become too reliant on it.

The Canadian company would pose a risk to all the companies on the platform and irate consumers if it owns too much consumer data and launches its own marketplace. However, Shopify’s general approach and its merchant-friendly reputation don’t indicate any immediate threat.

Jason Goldberg from Publics says Shopify has better opportunities in financial services and generating traffic for the merchants’ website. Satish Kanwar, VP of product for Shopify, assured that every product decision taken would be to make commerce better for everyone.
