An eventual rollout of 5G could result in an Augmented Reality “boom”

5G network speeds are expected to be between 10 to 100 times of the current 4G LTE wireless.

A recent Ericsson report revealed use cases of the 5G network and its effect on augmented reality (AR), amid COVID-19. As per the study, mainstream consumer awareness about 5G has grown 20% since the pandemic first impacted the US.

By 2030, around half of revenue from immersive video formats will come from AR. 5G is expected to provide extended processing power to support complex AR and mixed reality graphics. With 5G, AR can be used in home planning, education, advertising and mobile commerce.

The recent 5G-enabled iPhone 12 launch by Apple also increased the tech’s awareness among consumers. However, owing to the pandemic, consumers willing to pay extra for a premium 5G service has dropped to 10% from 20%.
