The new regulatory body can suspend, block, and reverse decisions taken by tech giants.

The UK government has created a new regulatory body called the Digital Markets Unit (DMU) to oversee the behaviour of big tech platforms. DMU will be accommodated within the existing Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The new body will collaborate with regulators like Ofcom and Information Commissioner’s Office to create and implement a new code of conduct. Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports notes people will have more control over their data with the new code of conduct.

Further, the code of conduct is expected to “rebalance” the relationship between publishers and online platforms. With DMU, digital platforms will have to be more transparent about consumers’ data usage and give them the choice of receiving personalised ads.
