Products like newsletters and podcasts can help publishers maintain subscriptions in 2021.
Digital subscription revenue for media companies worldwide has grown significantly. The New York Times with its 7.5 million total subscribers has the “largest and fastest” growing revenue stream, while The Wall Street Journal with 3.22 million subscriptions saw a 19% growth compared to the earlier year.
The Guardian also reported a 60% YoY growth, nearing to one million subscribers. Further, The Times predicts its total subscription revenue in Q1 of 2021 to increase 15% compared to 2020.
Nearly 202,000 of the net 627,000 subscribers added to The New York Times in Q4 2020 were from games, cooking, and audio, substituting the traditional print media. Also, business-focused publishers like Bloomberg Media recorded an 80% growth in subscriptions and 20% growth in traffic from December 2020.
