Online sweet-snack buying saw a 104% growth in 2020.

With people largely home-bound in 2020, more sweet snacks were bought than usual. Numerator’s Sweet Treat Tracker observed an 8% growth in sugary snack-food buying last year. Instant gratification purchase jumps were led by ice cream (20%) and packaged cookies (11%).

The study found that baking chips and mixes was the best performing category, which was up 24% in 2020. This trend continued in 2021, with year-to-date 2021 sales seeing 23% growth against the same period in 2020. Year-to-date 2021 online sweet treat sales also grew 119% versus the same period last year.

“Consumers use snacks as a moment of comfort and indulgence,” a Mondelēz International spokesperson observed. A separate report found that ad spending for cookies increased 45.1% to $116 million, while spending for treats dropped 16.2% to $1.2 billion in 2020.
