Cannes Lions’ annual Festival of Creativity will likely be a hybrid, digital-live event this year.
Earlier this year, Cannes Lions announced the annual event would return to a live-event in June 2021 after being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, the organisers recently issued its 2020 full-year financials and announced the 2021 annual event could be a hybrid event format.
The Festival organisers said the vaccination programs could play a critical role in allowing in-person attendance in Cannes. However, the awards portion of the event would be “fully digital” this year.
Cannes Lion’s parent company Ascential also said depending on the situation, it could still cancel all events in 2021. Due to the crisis, the company’s overall revenue was down by 31% last year. The cancellation of Cannes further “reduced the opportunity to drive new business.”
