35% of Britons get news via social media

A recent Ofcom report found that 91% of Britons over 65 use Facebook.

According to the report, 94% of people over 18 in the UK are online, 82% use social media, and 62%  play games online. Popular websites based on minutes-a-day in the UK include Google (52 minutes), Facebook (29 minutes), and TikTok (26 minutes).

Facebook is popular among older people and platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat and Instagram are used by people aged 16-24. 64% of adults seek online headlines weekly, and 35% access news via social media. Local News outlets like Reach plc are popular.

Gaming and video preoccupy users under 18 with over 95% of children using video-sharing platforms. WhatsApp and Messenger are the most popular messaging app, while NextDoor is emerging among 54% of people aged over 54. Audio platforms like Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces are also growing.
