A report by the consumer group Which has revealed around 18 fake review-generating Facebook groups that had more than 200,000 people.
Facebook is yet to adequately address fake reviews posted by bad actors on the platform. According to the study, certain Facebook groups continue to offer free Amazon products and refunds in exchange for five-star reviews against Amazon’s terms and conditions.
Researchers from the consumer group were given hundreds of free products within minutes of signing up on the Facebook groups, in exchange for the reviews. The report has uncovered 18 such Facebook groups, with over 200,000 people, many dating back to 2011 and 2014.
These are despite that Facebook had earlier made promises to the UK Competition and Markets Authority to reprimand this fake-review generating activity. A Which investigation last year also found that Twitter was full of fake reviews as well, with phrases like “Amazon freebies” and “free Amazon products for review” revealing fake review agents.
