Lakers vs Cavaliers: LeBron’s new team far more popular than his old one

One-third of Americans have a positive view of the Los Angeles Lakers, compared to 26% who have a positive impression of the Cleveland Cavaliers

NBA player LeBron James shocked many fans when he recently announced his plans to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers (for the second time in his career) and head to Los Angeles to play for the Lakers.

In addition to the sunny Los Angeles weather and a 4-year deal worth $154 million, James might also enjoy the fact that his new team is far more popular than his old one, according to data from YouGov Ratings.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the 17th most popular sports team, and the 9th most famous. In comparison, the Cleveland Cavaliers are the 60th most popular sports team, and the 54th most famous, according to data from YouGov Ratings.

As for LeBron James himself, a little less than half (44%) of Americans have a positive opinion of him. Another 21% have a negative opinion of him, while 26% of people are neutral about the basketball player. He’s most popular with millennials, 49% of whom say they have a positive opinion of him.

Overall, LeBron James is the 6th most popular contemporary sports personality, and the 2nd most famous. In terms of popularity, he ranks below athletes Serena Williams, Venus Williams, John Cena, Simone Biles and Danica Patrick.
