In this week’s Economist/YouGov Poll, Americans were asked to evaluate the Democrats, the Republicans, and the President in terms of their concern about issues that affect the wealthy, the middle class and the poor.
Just about half say Democrats and the President are concerned about each of the three groups. Not so with the Republicans — only about a third say the GOP cares about the poor and the middle class. But when it comes to looking out for wealthy Americans, more than seven in ten see the Republicans are concerned.
While partisans are more likely to see their own party as concerned about the problems of the middle class, similar percentages of Republicans and Democrats agree that the Republican Party is concerned about the wealthy. And both Republicans and Democrats are more likely to think the Democrats care about the poor.
This Economist/YouGov poll shows support for raising taxes on wealthy Americans. 55% of Americans would raise taxes on those making $250,000 a year or more — and even more – 68% – would raise them on people with incomes above $1 million.
Nearly half of Republicans, a group that opposes most tax increases, would raise taxes on millionaires.
In fact, 65% of all respondents believe the rich pay “too little” in taxes. 42% of Republicans agree. On the other hand, 53% overall say the middle class pays “too much.”
