(Week of 3/10/2012) This Economist/YouGov Poll was mostly conducted before the news of an American soldier allegedly murdering more than a dozen Afghan civilians — an action that occasioned apologies from a number of U.S. dignitaries, including the President. But Americans agree that a Presidential apology for U.S. mistakes abroad may be the right thing to do — at least sometimes.

Democratic voters are more willing to have a President apologize — 86% of them say it’s at least sometimes appropriate. Republican voters are less willing, although 52% of them say a Presidential apology is at least sometimes appropriate.
