(Week of 5/19/2012) Nearly three in four Americans view the countries of Western Europe, including Great Britain, France and Germany, as friends, but fewer in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll think they are good role models: just 52% say Western Europeans have strong social values.
Conservatives especially are distressed by Western Europeans’ social values. 53% of conservatives say Western Europeans do not have strong social values. 33% of conservatives say they do.
Americans as a whole generally agree that Western Europeans are reliable partners in the war on terror (59% agree, 22% do not). And Americans in general appear to be aware of the fiscal and economic struggles that the European Union is now going through—only 32% of Americans believeWestern European countries have strong economies. (There are concerns about the U.S. economy as well. Nearly a third of Americans believe the U.S. economy is getting worse; just 24% think it’s improving.)
