(Week of 8/25/2012) Americans aren’t necessarily going to be glued to their televisions sets as the Republican National Convention begins this week. And they aren’t going to be paying any more attention to the Democratic National Convention next week. Just about half of those in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll say they won’t watch at all.

Only 20% claim they will watch "most" of each convention’s coverage; another third say they’ll watch "some" and a few more will watch the candidate speeches only. And those who watch will be the most committed: more than half of Democrats won’t watch the RNC; more than half of Republicans won’t watch the DNC. Independents, whose votes in November will be critical, are more interested in watching the Republican Convention. 56% of independents claim they will watch at least part of the RNC, fewer say they will watch the Democrats convene.
