Slim lead for overturning DOMA among public

By a slim margin, more Americans support overturning the Defense of Marriage Act than upholding it

The Supreme Court announced today that it had ruled the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law banning the federal government from recognizing same marriage, is unconstitutional.

A recent YouGov showed that those who favored overturning DOMA outnumber those who support it. Overall, 44% support the overturning of the law, while 39% prefer that it be upheld.

Opinon on the matter divides firmly along partisan lines with Democrats firmly for the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act and Republicans firmly against overturning it.

Similarly the Supreme Court Justices in their 5-4 decision split along ideological lines, with the swing vote Justice Kennedy joining liberals Bader Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan in favor of the decision and conservatives Justices Alito, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas opposed to it.
