The internet and antibiotics are the greatest inventions of the past 85 years according to Americans - making them the greatest things since sliced bread.
This past week was the 85th birthday of sliced bread, which was first mechanically produced in Des Moines, Iowa in 1928. It took the inventor, Otto Rohwedder, over a decade of struggle to finally come up with a successful bread slicer.
The latest research from YouGov shows that the internet and antibiotics are both tied in the top spot, with 26% of Americans saying that each are the greatest inventions in the past 85 years. The second greatest invention is personal computers, which was declared greatest by 12% of people.
Opinions as to the greatest invention vary greatly depending on age. Among people aged 29 or under, a full 40% say that the internet was the greatest invention, compared to 17% who chose anti-biotics. People aged 65 or over chose antibiotics (28%) followed by the internet (20%).
Interestingly, people under the age of 30 were much more likely to say that cell phones were greater inventions than personal computers. In every age group over 30, however, personal computers were more likely to be chosen as the 'greatest'.
