(Week of 6/15/2013) One of the key questions awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision this term is the Voting Rights Act, passed in the 1960’s to insure that African-Americans were able to vote in places where they had been discriminated against in the past. This week’s Economist/YouGov Poll suggests the public may have changed its mind about the Voting Rights Act in the last few years: many aren’t sure it is still necessary.
As recently as 2009, a slim majority thought the act was still necessary, according to a CNN/ORC poll. But support has now slipped in the other direction, although the difference is narrow. Liberals, moderates, Democrats, and African-Americans, along with college graduates and those with incomes over $100,000 a year continue to think the Voting Rights Act is necessary.
