Former President Donald Trump is expected to announce his 2024 presidential candidacy in the days following the congressional elections — setting off a more formal beginning of the 2024 presidential election campaign. While President Joe Biden has not declared his candidacy for 2024, he said in October that it is his "intention to run again."
Most Americans do not want to see that happen, according to recent Economist/YouGov polling. When asked about each man's potential 2024 candidacy, 56% say they do not want Biden to run and 53% don't want Trump to run.
One-quarter of Americans (25%) say no to both Biden and Trump running in 2024, while just 6% want both Biden and Trump to run again.
Republicans generally are more enthusiastic about another Trump candidacy than Democrats are about a Biden reelection bid. Half of Republicans want Trump to run again and want Biden to refrain from running, while 13% of Republicans are unsure about Trump but know that they don't want Biden to run for reelection. One-third of Democrats (32%) are certain they want Biden to run and for Trump to not. One-quarter of Democrats (25%) are unsure about Biden and do not want Trump to seek re-election.
