But while royals dominate a list of public figures, Markle is a fair way down
In less than a month’s time, American actress Meghan Markle will marry a member of the British Royal Family, Prince Harry. And YouGov Ratings data shows that the Royals fare well with the US public.
Three of the top five most popular public figures in America – a list mostly consisting of politicians and religious figures – are members of the British Royal family. Queen Elizabeth II is the second-most popular person, with 60% having a positive opinion of her. Her grandson William is in fourth position (58%) and his brother Harry is in fifth (57%).
While Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is in eighth position (55%), Markle currently scores much lower, with a 36% positive opinion. There is a gender divide here, with 39% of women viewing her favourably compared to 32% of men. 28% of Americans have not heard of her at all, which may change as her wedding approaches.
The data shows that women have more affection for the royals. Prince William is the most popular on the public figure list among American women (67%) while Prince Harry follows close behind in second (66%). Middleton is the third most-popular public figure among US women (66%), while the Queen is fourth (65%).
And it is Baby Boomers who like the Royals most. Prince William is the most popular (67%), with the Queen in second (64%), Prince Harry in fifth (63%) and Midleton in sixth (62%).
