On Tuesday, Netflix released a first-look clip of “Becoming,” a documentary about former First Lady Michelle Obama. The film follows Obama through a 34-city book tour, as she participates in community events and shares lessons from her own life.
Data collected within hours of the trailer’s release using YouGov Direct indicates that most poll respondents have favorable views of Michelle Obama and high expectations for “Becoming.”
Among YouGov Direct users who watched the first-look clip from Netflix, 30 percent said they expect the documentary will be great, while another 28 percent think it will be good.
Impressions of Michelle Obama remain high. Before viewing the clip, 45 percent of respondents reported having a very favorable view of the former First Lady, while 18 percent had a somewhat favorable view. After seeing the clip, those numbers remained high, with 65 percent of users saying they had a very or somewhat favorable view of Michelle Obama.
YouGov Direct users who have Netflix subscriptions are especially likely (71%) to say they have a favorable view of Michelle Obama after viewing the clip. Most of this group also anticipates that the movie will be great (32%) or good (30%).
Michelle Obama’s high favorability ratings shouldn’t come as a surprise. YouGov’s World’s Most Admired survey from July 2019 found that Michelle Obama was the most admired woman, both globally and within the United States. Her husband, Barack Obama, is the second-most admired man in the world after Bill Gates.

Methodology: Data is based on 1,271 interviews with YouGov Direct panelists, including 643 who have Netflix subscriptions. The dataset was weighted based on age and gender to best represent the US population. Interviews were conducted through the YouGov Direct app on April 28, 2020.
