Americans say they don’t like Islam: in this week’s Economist/YouGov Poll, twice as many have a negative view of it as a positive one — a sentiment that is unchanged from one year ago.

Americans continue to admit they are unfamiliar with Islam — more than one in four say they just don’t know enough about it to judge. Democrats with an opinion are evenly divided; Republicans are overwhelmingly negative.
One reason this may be is fallout from the 9/11 terrorist attacks: many Americans see Islam itself as a violent religion. 43% think that it is more likely to encourage violence than other religions; only 4% say it is less likely to do that.

Older Americans, Republicans and conservatives are more likely than other groups to describe Islam as a more violent religion.
