Coronavirus cases continue to spike in states across the country.
Many public figures and politicians have a responsibility for coronavirus handling, including the president. How do Americans overall feel about President Donald Trump’s response to coronavirus?
Data from the latest Economist/YouGov poll finds that about half (51%) of Americans currently disapprove of how Donald Trump is handling the coronavirus. About two in five (39%) approve of how he is responding to the pandemic.
Trump’s approval rating on this issue reached a high of 50 percent approval on March 28, but has gradually declined since. This high approval rating came shortly after that Trump said in a press briefing that America would be open “a lot sooner” than three or four months and also declared, “We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself.”
In the most recent Economist/YouGov poll, likely Trump voters (meaning registered voters who say they would vote for Trump if the election were held today) are especially likely to approve (90%) of how Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic. In contrast, nearly all (94%) likely Biden voters say that they disapprove of how the president has responded to coronavirus.
Those who say they have been following news about COVID-19 very closely are especially likely (62%) to say they disapprove of Trump’s response to coronavirus.

Methodology: The Economist survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 1,500 U.S. adult citizens interviewed online between June 21 - 23, 2020. This sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the American Community Survey, conducted by the US Bureau of the Census, as well as 2016 Presidential vote, registration status, geographic region, and news interest. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel to be representative of all US citizens. The margin of error is approximately 3.4% for the overall sample.
