Many Americans who voted in the 2022 election say they decided which congressional candidate they would vote for more than a month before casting their ballot. Just 8% of voters waited until the same day that they voted to decide who they would select, according to a YouGov poll of 1,500 U.S. adult citizens conducted November 8-9, 2022. Democrats and Republicans are similarly likely to have decided their congressional vote more than 30 days in advance.
About half of voters say that a congressional candidate's party affiliation helped them decide their vote this year, with Democrats and Republicans being more likely than Independents to consider party affiliation a key decision-making factor. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say conversations with people they know were influential in deciding their vote, and Democrats were more affected by social media.
