2020 altered content consumption habits

A recent Parse.ly study highlights the type of content Americans were consuming more during 2020.

COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant shift in consumer behaviour and resulted in an unprecedented surge in the number of content consumers consume online. The study shows health and fitness websites saw a whopping 307% increase in engagement in the US in March 2020 compared to March 2019.

Similarly, career-focused sites saw a 188% year-over-year increase in engagement, while shopping sites saw a 162% rise and news sites were up by 143%. Between February and March 2020, shopping sites saw a 421% increase while health and fitness was up by 410%. Websites catering to religion and spirituality were the only ones to lose audience last year.

There was a 40% increase in smartphone usage in March 2020. In contrast, desktop usage was up by 23% and tablet usage increased by 20%.
