Some users will see a new "Tips" tab in their TikTok settings based on this update.
TikTok's latest monetisation update would let a few selected creators have a Tips section in their account options, through which they can apply to receive tips from their audience. But, creators need to have at least 100K followers and align with the platform rules and regulations to be eligible for Tips.
The ByteDance-owned video sharing platform claims the platform will not take any cut from creator tips, at least initially. Tipping is another part of the company's monetisation framework, with users able to purchase in-app coins that they can allocate as either tips, virtual gifts or creator shoutouts.
In a statement, TikTok said, "We're always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience." Apart from adding more monetisation options to incentivise users to keep posting and remain competitive with YouTube and Instagram, TikTok is also looking to help facilitate brand partnership deals as another revenue stream for creators.
